Cruz and Bardem marry

by thisweeknews 14. July 2010 15:38

Hollywood stars Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz have got married. The Spanish pair did the deed at a friend's house in the Bahamas, which is nice for them. The reason I felt like reporting on this matter was because I only recently got around to seeing 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona', and recall being very engaged by their performance as a couple with a somewhat tempestuous relationship. Anyway, that's that. I'm sure they'll be very happy.

Two Foxes cast in Madonna's feature debut

by thisweeknews 7. July 2010 14:51

Madonna has cast actor James Fox and his son Laurence Fox (aka Mr Billie Piper) in her feature debut 'W.E', which the singer has co-written and will direct. The pair will star, respectively, as King George V and his son Bertie in the movie, which is about Wallis Simpson, wife to Edward VIII, and catalyst for his abdication. Andrea Riseborough will play Simpson, whilst James D'Arcy takes on the role of Edward. I hope they survive the experience intact. Madonna doesn't have the best track record, cinema wise.

British actor to be new Spider-Man

by thisweeknews 2. July 2010 11:21

The producers of the 'Spider-Man' franchise have announced that 26 year old British actor Andrew Garfield is to play the lead role in the next film. As previously reported, Tobey Maguire, who previously played Spider-Man, dropped out earlier this year, as did the director of the first three films, Sam Raimi.

The next instalment will focus more on Peter Parker's formative years and his experiences at high school. Garfield, whose previous credits include 'The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus' and the yet to be released 'Never Let Me Go', will begin work on the film in December. The actor was born in the US to an English mother and an American father, but was raised in the UK, and trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama.

Director of the new film, Marc Webb, says of Garfield: "Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor's work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker".

Daniel Radcliffe to star in new 'All Quiet...' film

by thisweeknews 23. June 2010 14:18

Daniel Radcliffe is to appear in a new film version of Erich Maria Remarque's 'All Quiet On The Western Front'. The Harry Potter star will play the lead role of Paul Baumer, a German soldier fighting in the trenches during World War I. According to Variety, work on the film will begin in Spring 2012 - which is quite a long time away, really – once the actor's role in Broadway’s 'How To Succeed Without Really Trying' is over.

The book was previously adapted for a 1930 film, starring Lew Ayres, and won an Oscar for Best Picture. Producer Ian Stokell apparently says of Radcliffe: "We know he can tap into the delicate balance between intensity and believability that is critical for this demanding role".

Families of 7/7 victims urge 'Four Lions' boycott

by thisweeknews 6. May 2010 17:12

Some of the families of those killed in the 2005 London bombings are appealing to cinemas not to show Chris Morris's suicide bomber comedy 'Four Lions'. The film is about four men who travel to London with the aim of engaging in terrorist activity.

Graham Foulkes, whose 22 year old son David was killed in the 7/7 attacks, says that the content of the film is too close to reality to what really happened. "It's very aligned to what happened in 2005 and they talk about bombing in London" he said in a radio interview. "That's not parodying or being satire about terrorists. It's making money about a specific attack".

Grahame Russell, father of Philip Russell, who also died in the attack, told 5 live: "I didn't see the humour in four people buying ingredients to make a bomb to come to London and kill innocent members of the public travelling on the underground. I didn't think that was funny at all".

The movie, which will as previously reported open this year's Cannes Film Festival, also stars Cate Blanchett and Mark Strong.

A spokesman for Australia Post said: "The release of the film Robin Hood this month is of global interest and we thought it would be very fitting to pay tribute to this great actor by producing the Robin Hood stamp pack".

Crowe was born in New Zealand, but became an Australian citizen back in 2006.

Haim died of natural causes

by thisweeknews 5. May 2010 16:23

Late 'Lost Boys' star Corey Haim, who, as previously reported, passed away back in March at the age of 38, did not die because of his drug problems - as many suspected - but from more natural causes. A post-mortem has revealed that the actor was killed by pneumonia not directly linked to drug abuse; he had a low level of drugs in his bloodstream, but not, according to the coroner's report "at a level that would have contributed to his death". It's not clear how long he had been ill, and whether he would still be alive or not, had he been treated in time.

PRS Foundation support women in music debate

by thisweeknews 29. April 2010 14:39

The Association Of Independent Music's recently staged an event that discussed the lack of women, and diversity in general, in the music industry, especially at the higher executive level. Now the PRS For Music Foundation has confirmed it is involved in an event which will "explore why women are outnumbered six to one amongst registered music creators and songwriters".

The panel debate is being staged as part of the Sound & Silents programme - a series of events staged by Bird's Eye View featuring live scores for films all written by cutting edge female artists - and will feature contributions by Speech Debelle, Mira Calix, Rachel Portman and Janis Susskind. Miranda Sawyer will chair.

Confirming their support for the event, PRS Foundation Co-Director Vanessa Reed told CMU: "If we want women to maximise their creative talent, we need to work across the creative industries so that we can understand the barriers and to raise awareness of the current status quo".

The panel takes place on 24 May at 7pm at Kings Place in London.

Avatar star tipped as next Bond

by thisweeknews 22. April 2010 13:08

'Avatar' star Sam Worthington is being tipped as the next actor to take over the role of James Bond. This tipping seems to have come about because the newest film in the series has, as previously reported, been put on hold because of uncertainty over the future of MGM. There's no indication at all that current incumbent Daniel Craig will therefore pull out, but there is precedent, because on previous occasions, production hiatuses on the series have led to new casting.

According to reports, Worthington tested for the role before Daniel Craig was cast. Bookmaker William Hill has made him the favourite to take over the famous part, giving him odds of 5/2, ahead of  Christian Bale and Will Smith, both with odds of 7/1.

Helen Mirren on evil Brits

by thisweeknews 21. April 2010 14:44

Helen Mirren has been talking about what a shame it is that Brits are in Hollywood so often typecast as villains. She told reporters: "I think it's rather unfortunate that the villain in every movie is always British. It's just nice to say we're not snooty, stuck-up, malevolent, malignant creatures as we're often portrayed. We're actually kind of cool and hip."

She continued: "I love the idiosyncracy of the British people, I love the eccentric nature. It's very important to let Americans know that we're not just the royal family, there's a lot more to us than that".

Cameron Douglas gets five years in prison

by thisweeknews 21. April 2010 14:19

Michael Douglas's son Cameron Douglas has been sentenced to five years in prison for drug dealing. The 31 year old pleaded guilty to the charges of dealing methamphetamine and possessing heroin after his January 2009 arrest at a New York Hotel. Douglas told the court in Manhattan this week: "I'd like to apologise to my family and my loved ones for putting them through this nightmare of my own making".

Michael Douglas was in attendance, as was his former wife, Cameron's mother Diandra. Douglas recently wrote a letter to the judge asking for leniency, as did his current wife, Catherine Zeta Jones, and his 93 year old father Kirk Douglas. Cameron will be credited with time already served, as he has been incarcerated for the last eight months.

Work on next Bond film suspended indefinitely

According to reports, production on the next James Bond film has been indefinitely suspended because of uncertainty regarding the future of potential distributors MGM. Producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions say they don't know when work will recommence on the 23rd instalment, which was scheduled for release in 2011 or 2012: "Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio, we have suspended development on Bond 23 indefinitely", the pair confirmed.

Current Bond star Daniel Craig is quoted as saying: "I have every confidence in Barbara and Michael's decision and look forward to production resuming as quickly as possible".

Actor Sotigui Kouyate has died in Paris at the age of 74. Born in Mali to Gambian parents, the award winning star of 7/7 bombings film 'London River' came from a long line of griots – traditional storytellers – but began his career on stage as a favour to a friend. During his career, he wrote and staged a number of plays himself, and had a long association with Peter Brook, most notably collaborating on the 1989 film of 'The Mahabharata'. He also founded the Mandeko Theatre, in Mali capital Bamako. James Cameron's 'Avatar' has done well at the Empire Film Awards, taking three gongs: the sci-fi movie was named Best Film, the aforementioned Cameron took Best Director, and cast member Zoe Saldana won Best Actress. Comedy star Johnny Vegas accepted the award on Saldana's behalf, joking that he'd met Saldana on "an intensive driving course in Blackpool. Other winners included 19-year-old Aaron Johnson, who got Best Newcomer for his portrayal John Lennon in 'Nowhere Boy', directed by his fiancee Sam Taylor Wood, Ian McKellen, who was presented with the Empire Icon Award, and Andy Serkis, who was given the Inspiration Award. Christoph Waltz, who has triumphed in the Best Supporting Actor category at most of this year's award ceremonies, on this occasion picked up the Best Actor gong. Elsewhere, Ray Winstone took the Outstanding Contribution to British film award and Jude Law was named Empire Hero.
